An interactive post in the Google+ stream is similar to a basic shared post but adds a call-to-action button and support for deep linking. This is one of the greatest features within Google+, but rarely utilised due to implementation complexity. This plugin streamlines interactive post implementation on WordPress websites.…

Social media and mobile technologies in bridging digital divides

Digital inequalities such as digital divides are a big issue in the information society, potentially influencing engagement in political, social, and educational life. They create marginalized, excluded groups who do not have access to the Internet, to information, or maybe to the necessary skills for using these devices and social applications.

Scientists Use AuthorRank-Like Logic to Assess Article Quality on Wikipedia

Xiangju Qin and Pádraig Cunningham from UCD have just published an interesting paper which discusses the challenges in quality assessment of Wikipedia articles. Their approach to quality scoring is based on three main modes:

  1. Edit contribution
  2. Contributor authoritativeness measures
  3. Combination of the two

The hypothesis is that Wikipedia pages with a significant number of contributions from authoritative editors are likely to be of a high quality.

Okay, yes! There are loads of blog posts with examples of calls to action out there already, but we’re often asked for good examples, and having looked through some of the existing posts, they don’t do exactly what I want. What Is the Value of a Facebook “Like” Anyway?

Facebook Like

With over 1 billion active users as of this year, Facebook is no doubt the social network to master for marketers. However, for most company Facebook accounts, the focus isn’t generally on the number of “likes” or “fans” earned. How to Visualise Very Large Websites

If you’re running a small-to-medium sized website, visualising website architecture isn’t difficult. What do you do if your website exceeds 100,000 or even 1,000,000 pages?

Visio, PowerMapper, SmartDraw and similar applications won’t do the trick. They produce great visualisations in a relatively short time period, but they fail/break/time out when facing websites such as eBay and Amazon.

Webmaster Tools Changes Bring Schema Into Focus

Rich SnippetsThe Changes

WMT Menu

Changes to webmaster tools now bring Schema markup features heavily into focus. The menu structure (shown on the right) now contains a new category “Search Appearance” immediately below messages, putting it above other tools in WMT.

The Search Appearance category contains the Structured Data, Data Highlighter, HTML improvements, and Sitelinks management tools.

Is Google’s Cache Your Traffic or Google’s Traffic?

I have real-time analytics on my wall in the office and every now and then I bump into an odd case of search traffic. This time I spotted a very unusual keyword:

cache:http://dejanseo.com.au/anchor-text-proximity-experiment/

keyword

It’s impossible to search Google for the above as a regular query (unless you use quotes) and users are taken to Google’s cache of the page and not your own site.
